The Clothes Closets

Donating to a clothes closet is a wonderful way to help those in need. Clothes closets are typically community-based programs that provide free clothing to individuals and families in need. They may be run by churches, nonprofits, shelters, or local community organizations.

Donating gently used clothes to the homeless is a great way to give back to your community. Here's how you can do it:

1. Choose the Right Items:
  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Consider the climate in your area. Warm coats, gloves, hats, and scarves are especially valuable in colder months.

  • Quality: Make sure the clothes are still in good condition—no stains, tears, or excessive wear.

  • Versatility: Opt for basic items like t-shirts, jeans, socks, and jackets that can be worn in various situations.

2. Sort and Clean Your Clothes:

  • Gently used: Only donate clothes that are gently used and in good condition—no stains, rips, or heavy wear.

  • Clean: Be sure the clothes are clean and freshly laundered before donating. Most clothes closets don’t have the resources to clean donated items.

  • Seasonal clothes: If possible, consider the season. In winter, coats, sweaters, and warm clothing are in high demand, while lighter clothing is more useful during warmer months.

3. Items to Donate:

  • Clothing: Donate basic items like shirts, pants, jackets, coats, socks, underwear, and shoes. Make sure all sizes are represented, from children's to adult sizes.

  • Accessories: Items like scarves, gloves, hats, and belts can be very helpful.

  • Bedding and Towels: If the clothes closet also serves those experiencing homelessness or families in crisis, they may accept bedding, blankets, and towels.

  • Hygiene Items: Some clothes closets accept unopened hygiene products like soap, toothpaste, and deodorant, which can make a big difference for someone in need.

4. Packaging Your Donation:

  • Bag the clothes: Organize your donations by type (e.g., shirts, pants, jackets) and place them in separate bags for easy distribution.

  • Label by size (optional): If you have a variety of sizes, it’s helpful to label the bags or boxes with the size of clothing inside (e.g., men’s medium, women’s small, children’s size 6).

  • Include any extra items: If you’re donating shoes, accessories, or hygiene products, pack them separately or in the same bag, and make sure they’re clean and in good condition
